Where this lovely couple is walking and chatting about everyday stuff, just a few hours earlier there was nothing but salt water and a handful of surfers eagerly chasing the biggest waves. The light is pretty much unedited. I used to laugh at how, whenever Netflix makes a documentary about places like Mexico or Morocco, the white balance gets pushed way into the warm tones. Being there, I found out it's actually real. And I'll admit, timing was everything here. A lot of things just clicked. The waves here are gentler. It's much shallower, which is why the local surf schools set up shop on this side. Just look at all the colourful boards and the tireless daredevils, guys and girls, trying to catch their first waves. Warm-up first, as you can see in the photo. A few hours later – unlike the side where we met the two walkers – this spot fills with water right up to the top of the steps on the left. You can see it in the grooves in the rocks, too. What do you think it looks like? Clean and pretty, like some lakeside riviera in Masuria? Not a chance. It's the smell of fish, damp and the carnage that goes on there every single day – but… oh, the colours. All these beautiful boats fading into ultramarine, and you can tell they've been through more than one storm. The agenda is simple. Sail, fish, sell. That's it. Well, maybe toss the local cats a snack as a quality check. And there's no shortage of testers. Hauled up onto the sand by hand and pushed back out to the water. Here, too, everything runs on the tide. The way nature intended. It's not the neat, well-kept one in Gdynia, and it's not that famous one in LA either. Not even close. It's a kind of local hangout right at the top of the hill – colourful, sure, but above all it has the spirit of my teenage years. Skaters, guys and girls, flying around from afternoon till evening, pop punk blasting at full volume, plus loads of locals and tourists watching. Green tea, obviously. But what really caught my eye were the little gaps and spots where I could set up the camera and get this shot with one of the best performers of the night.
